---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Early morning in Konoha; no time better to get some training done, especially when one had a mission coming up that very day. That was the situation that Rock Lee found himself in as he began to do his usual morning routine of exercise….except it was in a different location. Instead of a clearing in the woods, he was at the gates of Konoha, awaiting the team he was to be a part of for this upcoming mission. Not wanting to just stand there and waste time, Lee was taking advantage of the hour or so of time till everyone else would start to arrive (Lee was fashionably early) to get in more training. After all, there was never a bad time for training! Besides, he had to be in the best shape he could for his new if temporary teammates. He was representing Gai-sensei in front of them, and he had to make him proud!
The idea of it all was kind of strange though, being on a different team. It was a new idea being proposed among some of the instructors to help the Genin. Since as Chuunin they may be forced to work with people outside of their core squad, mixing them up for the occasional mission at the Genin level would help them learn to be able to deal with others. It would also encourage friendly relations amongst the Genin Squads as well as help them to learn to adapt to new situations and teammates. Obviously, when Gai-sensei informed them of this program Lee had been almost halfway to another team he was so eager to volunteer. Not that he wanted to leave Gai-sensei of course; it was just he had heard about the ‘prodigy’ that was Sasuke Uchiha from the new batch of Genin, and Lee had wanted to work with him.
Now, that wasn’t what he ended up with. Instead, he ended up with a team that seemed just as interesting. First, there was Hinata Hyuuga, a relative of his fellow teammate Neji. Lee thought it strange Neji rarely ever mentioned her, but Lee was excited to meet this fellow Hyuuga and to test his skill against her. After all, as a relative of Neji she had to be an excellent taijutsu user! Then there was a Shikamaru Nara. While Lee knew of the Nara, Lee had no experience in dealing with them. So there was the excitement of learning something knew and to test himself against the unknown. Finally, there was their sensei for the mission, Kurenai. He knew nothing of her; and of course the unknown was of great interest and excitement for the green-jumpsuit lad.
”All right then, if I can not do 1000 push ups before the first teammate arrives, I shall prepare them all lunch!” Lee shouted (to himself) to get him pumped up to train. And if he failed, well, he could be making lunch for his teammates and gaining their friendship! It was a win-win situation! But he better get started now; someone else on the team might be fashionably early like him!

Early morning did not agree with one ninja of the Leaf that preferred to be on the lazy side of things. He did not like to deal with people this early in the morning and the worse was his mother. His mother had woke him up because of the mission assignment a few hours before he was suppose to meet the team. He did not like that mainly because he had to listen to her complain about this and that and he did not want to listen to it. So he ate his breakfast faster than what he normally would have and headed out the door. By chance he could at least take a nap before the schedule meeting team. He was unsure who was going to be with and did not care at the moment. He was looking forward to his soon nap.
He slowly walked closed to the gates and then stopped when he saw someone dressed in all green and doing pushups. He yawned slightly and shook his head. He was unfamiliar with the boy, but knew he graduated a year before. He had not seen him around the academy in his last year and him being here right now with a headband he knew he had passed. The one thing that he did remember about the kid from the academy that he had lack chakra and yet he was still a ninja.
Shikamaru had to give the boy that because it was interesting, however, it was not that interesting to toy with. He wanted his nap and some kid doing pushups was not going to stop him from getting it. He looked around and saw a small tree overlooking the gate and he walked slowly over to it and sat down. He leaned his back against the tree and yawned some and closed his eyes.
As long as the boy over in the distance was not going to toy with him and try and make him do some pushups he would be fine and get some sleep. He glanced slightly up towards the sky and saw the cloudless sky and sighed slightly. He could not even watched the clouds go by today. Today was going to be one of the days that he was going to regret sooner or later he was. He did not even want to do a mission, but anything was better than being dragged into a fight with the Uchiha kid because of Ino. It was even better than hanging out with Ino, but he did miss watching the clouds with Choji. ”Troublesome day…,” he muttered to himself.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ”That should be everything….” Hinata replied as she finally closed the small box of medical supplies. Today was going to be the first day of a long mission, and Hinata was making sure to have all her supplies ready. She already had a pack filled with basic supplies for long trips; durable food, water, shelter, clothes. These last few minutes had been a rush of gathering anything else she’d need such as extra kunai or shuriken. Sure, the mission was ranked low enough that she doubted that they would actually fight anything, but it was better to be safe than to be sorry. With that she placed the last of the supplies tightly into the pack, and after adjusting it to be as comfortable as possible, headed out.
The reason behind this mission was quite strange. To help encourage genins social and combat skills, they had mixed all the teams together for a mission. It was to help encourage the Genin to be able to mix and match skills for different situations and needs as well as being able to teach them to be flexible with who they work with. Hinata was looking forward to meeting these new teammates of her. She was really glad that she was still with Kurenai-sensei for this too; that made her feel a lot more comfortable than if she was working with all random strangers. Not that it was that exact situation; she knew Shikamaru from school, and Rock Lee from her cousin Neji’s experiences. It was going to be an…interesting mission. Really, really interesting.
Arriving at the gate that they were to meet at, Hinata was not surprised to find Lee was off doing some more exercises, and chances were he had been the first there. She had always heard he was so eager and enthusiastic about, well, everything. It was really admirable, even if he showed it in odd ways, like how he was currently on apparently his 750th pushup. Over by a tree was Shikamaru, napping as usual. He was probably wishing to be out watching clouds or something; she had heard that he liked to do that. With everyone doing their own thing, however, Hinata was not really sure what exactly to do. Should she say hello to them, or should she just go her own way and do something. The thing was, she really didn’t have anything to do….
”Good morning everyone. Shikamaru, nice to see you again, and pleased to meet you Lee. I am Hinata Hyuuga, Neji’s cousin” Hinata responded as she approached the two of them. She bowed a little towards Lee in a respectful greeting towards him before finding her own tree to relax to as she sat down to await Kurenai’s coming and the mission to start. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kurenai had been assigned to lead another team for a mission today. She knew one of the members of the Genin squad since she was on her team, but the other two she barely knew anything about besides that one of them was on Asuma’s team and that he was a Nara. She had asked him a few times about his students, but it was not like she really listened about each of them. The other member of the team was someone that had been a Genin for a year already so she was going to be expecting more from this Genin more so than the others for this mission. She hoped that it would show the two rookie ninjas the ropes of completing a mission successfully.
She slowly started to walk up to the area that she had written them to meet her at. She was expecting to be the first one, but when she moved closer to the scene she had seen all three of them waiting. The one in the green suit seemed excited and Hinata just seemed like she was going with the flow of things. The other one, Nara Shikamaru seemed like he was sleeping already like Asuma had said he would whenever given the chance to do so. She shook her head slightly and moved towards them and looked around at each of them.
”Lee right?” She asked and pointed to Shikamaru. ”Mind making sure he is awake so we can start this mission?” She was not annoyed by the fact that each of them where here before her and did not seem to be annoyed by the status of Shikamaru either. She knew what to expect from the Nara clan having dealt with them a few times in her own career, but right now they had been assigned a mission and she needed to prep them and make sure they were aware of the situation before the headed out.
The last thing that she needed was the three of them not being prepared and one of them ended up seriously hurt on the mission. She hoped that each of them had enough sense to know when they were up over their head, but of course she had been warned about Shikamaru and would be keeping a rather close eye on him.
She turned her attention to Hinata for a moment. ”Hopefully, we can meet as Team 8 soon. But for now this is what we are doing. Rock Lee and Nara Shikamaru will be joining us for the time being. She glanced around to Lee since he would be fulfilling the role of the main tai user. Shikamaru would most likely be the role of the catcher and Hinata the sensor for the mission. |

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was not long before Lee’s pushups began to hit into the triple digits. By the time that another member of the team arrived, Lee was already up to about his 500th pushup. Lee could see the boy in between views of the ground. He was little younger, maybe a year, and looked rather…lazy? His very first action was to head towards a tree and start napping under it. Hmm, this was Lee’s chance to play sensei! He would take that boy under his wing and help him unlock the youthful potential that lay beneath his lazy, slothful personality! Unless….he was tired and lazy cause he had spent his evening preparing and training for this mission! If that was the case, Lee had the upmost respect for the shinobi, though even Lee would admit the usefulness of sleep (he just preferred to use muscle-memory to practice training in his sleep). Either way, Lee had a feeling he would get to know him very well.
The second teammate arrived soon, and Lee was very quick to recognize her. She was a relative of Neji’s, though that was about all he knew. Neji wasn’t very open about his family, and while he had seen the girl around before Lee hadn’t talked to her that much. Still, she sounded very polite and well-mannered….much different from Neji. Since she was the only one of his teammates to come and welcome them a good morning, Lee was quick to act and be just as polite. On his 800th pushup he went full force, pushing him back up to his feet and giving her a thumbs up and smile, his usual exciting greeting.
”It is a pleasure to meet you Hinata-chan, and I look forward to working with you on this mission.”
At about that time an older woman, most likely their sensei, arrived. Within seconds he was given an order: to make sure that the boy that everyone was calling Shikamaru was awake and ready for the mission. Giving her a quick salute and guaranteeing her of the success of this order, Lee ran over to where the boy was sleeping. Lee thought for a second on how to best wake him up. A simple shake would probably do the trick; he had gotten in trouble the last time he tried a taijutsu technique to wake up someone. That was overkill. Grabbing Shikamaru on the shoulders, Lee started to shake him a bit, and give him a pep-talk.
”The sensei has arrived. Wake-up, wake-up, this is the prime of our youth. This is no time to be wasting it sleeping!”

Even though he seemed asleep to everyone else, Shikamaru was fully aware of what was going on around him. He heard Hinata come up and speak with the boy Lee. What caught him by surprise was the fact that their sensei had told the boy to make sure he was wake and ready for the mission. The voice sounded slightly familiar to him and he thought exactly where he had heard it before. His mind raced until he remembered him and Asuma running into another Jounin and Asuma had seemed off about the encounter. He knew it was her and he did not need anything to confirm it.
Before he could come up with a workable plan to make it seemed like he was already awake and listening he felt some hands on his shoulders started to shake him. Then the annoying voice came about being some kind of youth. He was not really paying attention to the voice has he opened his eyes and reached up and unlocked the hands away from his shoulders. Shikamaru looked more annoyed than anything has he slowly got to his feet and slipped his hands in his pockets.
”Your voice is a drag and it is troublesome to listen to when you are shouting like that in my ear. You sound like a nagging wife.” He slipped one of his hands out of his pockets and rubbed his ear slightly has if he was trying to get the noise Lee had caused out of it. He would not make that mistake again not getting up before the boy came and started to shake him.
He looked over to Hinata and Kunerai and watched the two of them. He did not know much about the Jounin, but he could assist the three Genin’s ability at the moment. They Hyuuga was simple, she was a scout. Lee was their attack. And that left him the capturer. ”This time is full of holes….you have a scout, an attack, and me the capturer…not very balance.” He was being honest and was trying to get something out of the Jounin about her ability so he could bug it in where she belonged in the team. It would allow him to better sum up any strategy that they would need down the line.
Shikamaru slowly looked to each of the three that was around him and then looked up towards the sky. It annoyed him for the most part being placed on a team that had someone has hyper has Lee. The most he had to endure before was Ino and she was easy to ignore until she started to nag more and more to the point he had no choice, but to pay attention to her. He would have to admit what he knew about Hinata was slim, but he knew she was shy and especially around Naruto. He did not see much use for the girl in a battle situation if she was going to continue being like that. As for him, he knew he was no use in a battle because he did not usually want to be dragged into a fight.
”Troublesome.”
